How to choose a managed IT provider in Salt Lake City: 10 questions to ask

July 2026 7 min read

Choosing a managed IT provider is one of the more consequential decisions a small business makes, this is the company that will hold the keys to your systems, your data, and your security. Not all IT providers are equal, and the differences aren't always obvious in a sales pitch. Here are the ten questions that separate a great partner from a risky one.

1. What's your average response time, and do you guarantee it?

"Fast" isn't an answer. Look for a real number and a written service-level agreement (SLA). We hold an average response of under one hour, and you should expect a specific commitment, not a vague promise.

2. Are you local, and do you provide on-site support?

A local provider can be on-site when remote support isn't enough, and they understand the businesses in your area. Ask where they're based and how quickly they can get to you.

3. How do you handle cybersecurity and compliance?

Security should be built in, not an add-on. Ask about MFA, endpoint protection (EDR), and monitoring, and if you're regulated, whether they handle HIPAA, PCI, GLBA, or the FTC Safeguards Rule. A good MSP talks specifics.

4. How do you back up our data, and do you test recovery?

Everyone "has backups." Fewer actually test that they can restore from them. Ask how often they verify recoveries, because an untested backup is just a hope.

5. Who answers when we call?

Is it a knowledgeable local helpdesk, or an overseas call center reading scripts? The people who pick up the phone are the service you're buying.

6. What's included in the monthly price, and what costs extra?

Understand the scope up front. A clear, all-in flat rate is far better than a low headline price with surprise charges every time something happens.

7. Do you require a long-term contract?

Confidence shows up as flexibility. Be cautious of anyone locking you into a multi-year deal before they've proven themselves.

8. Can you work alongside our existing staff or systems?

If you have an internal person or specific tools, a good MSP offers co-managed support that extends your team rather than replacing it.

9. Can you share references from businesses like ours?

A provider proud of their work will happily connect you with similar clients. Ask, and actually call them.

10. How do you help us plan ahead, not just fix what breaks?

The best providers act like a part-time IT strategist, helping you budget, plan upgrades, and reduce risk, not just react to outages.

Watch for red flags: no clear SLA, vague answers on security, pushy long contracts, fuzzy pricing, or no references. Any one of these is worth a pause.
